As you know, I am pretty excited whenever big news arises that will reduce our dependence on coal and oil for our energy needs. As was just announced a couple of days ago, AVA Solar, has revolutionized solar cell manufacturing making it far cheaper that it has ever been in the past. And the best news is, it is a Colorado State University Professor who invented it! They are planning on building a 200 megawatt factory in Fort Collins in the near future which will power 40,000 homes! Check out the information at the link below:

Wow, what a busy month! First, Kelley turned 27 on June 6th, then it was off to Hot Springs Virginia for a great wedding celebration for Andy and Courtney Shultz – Congratulations!. Upon returning to Colorado, Kelley and I closed on our first house (June 15th) and the following day were off to Redfeather Lakes for a second grand wedding celebration for Anya and Alex Blank – Congratulations! We returned to move all of our worldly possessions to our new place. Now, a week later (and still June) WE ARE OFF TO GREECE! Woohoo!

So, here are the appropriate photo galleries and links, enjoy!

This past Wednesday, Colorado State University hosted the renowned conservationist, Jane Goodall. Kelley and I were fortunate enough to get some tickets and were looking forward to what she had to say, as she has seen our planet change drastically during her career. I was also looking forward to plenty of chimp talk and therefore was giddy like a school child during the hours prior to her lecture.

To be honest I really wasn’t sure what to expect from her. I was hoping that she wouldn’t over-indulge in a typical “Save The Rainforests” rant and was pleasantly surprised when she dove right into sustainability and how all of this interrelated. She delivered us her personal turning point when she questioned how could she be so concerned about a specific species of animal when human beings living in the very same area of the world were starving and had an infant mortality rate that was higher than that of the animals she was studying? These realizations helped her broaden focus to a more global approach and she started the Jane Goodall Institute and other programs such as Roots and Shoots.

She spoke about how “thinking global and acting local” is the most important action each of us can realistically take – which is what the main message was in my mind. Things like, buy organic food – these products have have far fewer environmentally damaging chemicals sprayed on them, and the animals have most likely led a better, more fulfilling life than their non-organic counterparts. Don’t shop at Wal-Mart, which is essentially a sanctioned slave labor camp operating in almost every third world country (there is more slavery in the world today than ever before). These simple steps may cost a little more money in the short run, but let’s get serious – we are royally screwing up this planet and if we continue along this path – it is going to get a lot more expensive, and I don’t mean in dollars.

Ok, thanks for reading – here is what I was thinking about prior to the lecture.

Kelley and I did a ropes course together this past weekend. CSU has a pretty cool one built just off campus and I have wanted to try it for a long time. Most of the activities were partner specific so we had to work together to get through them. The hardest was the “Giant’s Ladder” which you see a picture of below involved scaling the ever shifting and increasingly distant rungs of, well a giant rope ladder. We made it all the way to the top with some clever use of each other as smaller ladders. If you click on the image below you can see some other pictures of our day.

Wow, there is a lot of stuff to update here! I guess I will start with where we left off on the last post and that was SNOW! As you know, Kelley and I spent some time down in Durango this Christmas – we rented an SUV and picked up Kelley’s sister, Heather from the Colorado Springs airport and completed the trek down to Durango without incident – it was snowy all around but the roads were perfectly maintained. Durango was, as always, a blast – lots of relaxation and laughs – it felt great! Click the image below to see all the pictures from Durango:

Of course, when we packed up to come home Colorado was getting another big bad blizzard. It took us 12 hours to travel north to Denver from Durango. This trip usually only takes 6 hours. Heather’s flight out of Colorado Springs was canceled of course and rather than trek another 4 hours north to Fort Collins (usually only takes 1 hour) we spent the night in Denver. The following day we learned that the snow caused CSU to be closed (3 and a half snow days so far this year!) and after driving back to Fort Collins and shoveling out – we were free to relax from the trip north.

Of course, we had to rest up for New Years! We decided to go out to the bars this year and got a whole crew together – we had a great time and drank way too much. Today we are going to sleep a lot and complete a mini detox session. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Lots of ATVs and snowmbiles towing snowboarders – it was pretty cool. We also heard that tomorrow is another snow day – that’s right CSU is closed again! This means that I am officially on Vacation! Anyway, overall I think Fort Collins co 22 inches of snow – and with the temperatures hitting 40 degrees today – I can’t wait to drive through town and check out all of the snowmen. We have to brave the roads early tomorrow to pick up the SUV we rented for the drive down to Durango – thank god we reserved a rental – our cars don’t do so hot in the snow anymore… Anyway – I hope everyone has a great vacation and Christmas and I will miss you all – maybe I’ll post something while I am in Durango to let you know how it is going! Happy Holidays!
